SPORTS AND RECREATION

Often cited as one of the “Best Places to Live” in the U.S., Greensboro is large enough to offer

a variety of excellent cultural, social, entertainment and athletic activities, yet small enough to

maintain a sense of community and charm. The UNCG campus is on the edge of downtown,

which is itself being transformed and revitalized as the city’s cosmopolitan hub for the arts and

entertainment, shopping and dining. Greensboro is green, also, with hundreds of acres in parks

and more than 90 miles of trails and greenways throughout the city.

The population of Greensboro is 280,000. The Piedmont Triad area (including Greensboro,

Winston-Salem, and High Point) is home to 1.6 million people. There are 10 other four-year

colleges and universities in the Piedmont Triad.

Greensboro’s weather is moderate with four seasons. Greensboro boasts pleasant weather year-

round within a four-season state. Winters are mild with average snowfall less than 10 cm. Fall

colors are spectacular, spring is cool, and summers can be hot and humid but with mild evenings.

Greensboro is ideally located in the verdant, rolling hills of the north central Piedmont region of

North Carolina. Both the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Atlantic coast are 3 hours drives away. The

city is well-connected via several interstate highways, halfway between Atlanta and Washington,

D.C. (approximately 310 miles to each/5-hour drive). Amtrak train, and many direct and affordable

flights are available to major cities such as New York, DC, Chicago, Atlanta, and Dallas.

Greensboro is also home to the largest water park in the Carolinas, Wet 'n Wild Emerald Pointe.

For those who prefer winter sports, the Greensboro Ice House is open year-round for skating and

hockey.

There is so much to discover in Greensboro—museums, theatre, movies, galleries, coffee bars,

concerts in the park, opera, ballet, and the symphony. Students also enjoy the nightlife in

downtown Greensboro, where there are dozens of restaurants and nightclubs.

Greensboro Coliseum, just a mile from campus, is the home court for UNCG's men's basketball

team and hosts a variety of sporting events and concerts throughout the year. Baseball fans enjoy

watching Greensboro Grasshoppers play in their downtown stadium, and soccer fans cheer for

the Carolina Dynamo.

There’s no shortage of malls and shopping centers in Greensboro. Retailers such as Belk, Macy's,

Barnes & Noble, The Apple Store, Gap, and REI are located at Friendly Shopping Center, just two

miles from campus.

RESTAURANTS & GROCERY MARKETS

There are hundreds of restaurants in the Triad catering to all tastes. Egyptian, Ethiopian,

Italian, Mexican, Middle Eastern, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Pizza, just to name a few.
